Working as a modern “Dr. Frankenstein,” Susan Chapin creates baskets and animated figures from discarded surplus and salvaged materials. Her practice is built on a commitment to avoiding new materials, instead leaning into the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi—finding beauty in things that are damaged and discarded. By transforming waste into unusual baskets and 3-dimensional collages, she explores the tension between the strangely peculiar and the hauntingly familiar.
